The Misfortunes of a Casual Observer

Post by Aurangzeb Khan »

A casual observer idly minding his own business on the western bank of the East Elwynn River might, if he were fishing for trout just north of the sluices by means of tossing in the occasional hand-grenade and scooping up with his net whatever floated to the surface, might just occasion to pause and glance skywards at this particular moment. Were he to do so our anonymous observer might see a lone contrail proceeding on a southerly bearing, perhaps from the direction of Eliria. Our fisherman friend will probably think nothing of it as he turns back to his work and tosses another grenade for his supper and as the great dull splosh of white foaming water erupted to disgorge into the air a fountain of concussion addled fish he would miss the sharp banking and 90 degree turn made by whatever object it was that had made that contrail. Nor would he have taken any note of the much smaller red metallic object which had detached and continued on the original southerly bearing at speeds in excess of Mach 0.80.

Even if he had known it would perhaps not have bothered him. His haul of fish was enough to keep his family’s bellies full of smoked trout for a dozen months and as he wandered back towards the hovel that was home to him and twelve others he contemplated his good fortune, unaware that two Cudgellers were stalking him through the undergrowth – having waited for him to expend the last of his grenades – intent on a spot of the old ‘tax and cudgel’ (or ‘cudgel and tax’ according to preference) with him and his family, which would of course be written up as expiating a nest of incorrigible poachers.
