The banner

Post by Ari Rahikkala »

Yes, it's black and white. Yes, it's simple. That's not the point, that's simply because I couldn't come up with anything beautiful like Elwynn's banner, and too much beauty would not be nice for Straylight anyway. In any case, the elements of the banner are quite simple: The sine wave was generated with a small C program written on the spot, the jolly roger is allegedly Henry Every's, and... it took surprisingly long to figure out how to produce the bicoloured text.

Suggestions for a better banner are welcome.

Also, if the banner looks like an iPod ad, I have failed my father.

Non-urgent question, for after Ari is finished with his paper:

I've looked at the forum from both here at home and from another computer. From that other computer, I can see the banners being used in place of the board names; from here, I see only board names, and no banners. Any idea what might be preventing me from seeing them here?

I like it ... :jadie
The character Andreas the Wise is on indefinite leave.
However, this account still manages:
Cla'Udi - Count of Melangia
Manuel - CEO of VBNC. For all you'll ever need.
Vincent Waldgrave - Lord General of Gralus
Q - Director of SAMIN
Duke Mel'Kat - Air Pirate, Melangian, and Duke of the Flying Duchy of Glanurchy

And references may be made to Vur'Alm Xei'Bôn (a Nelagan Micron of undisclosed purpose).

It's probably Norton Internet Security. It blocks all documents in a directory with /banners/ in its path

I have McAfee rather than Norton, but it was a similar problem; the Privacy Service can be a bit finicky. I probably should've guessed, it always tried to completely block amazon.com before I figured out how to make it stop...

Seems to be working now, though. Thanks.

I just stared at your avatar for the first time ever Shyriath, very nice. I had always assumed it was some weird kind of glowing bubble but the letters upgrade it from cool avatar to awesome avatar. :thumbsup

*Bows* Thankee, though I can't take credit for its creation. Someone else did that for me years ago.

I could try having an avatar again... I just can't think of anything but the lambda, and that's a bit uncool...

I like the idea a lot, but it doesn't really have a place in the banner... I might make crests for some of the sancts, though, and I think that one would be very appropriate for Incremental Search...

Actually, Incremental Search was named after the interface feature in... well... a lot of good programs :). I use incremental search constantly in Firefox, emacs and bash, and figured that it would be a good name for a sanct whose job is to simply be a "prototype"... searching the space of how to build sancts, partly by making it up as you go, i.e. searching incrementally.
