Perhaps taking a leave of 'absence

Post by hypatias mom »

I have found that certain sevrere health issues have necessitated a return to the physician, and perhaps to the hospital. I may not have the opportunity to give my fellow citizens timely notice, so I am doing it ahead of time. I will miss you all but will return as soon as my health improves. Thank you for your prayers and kind wishes.

UPDATE!

My mom asked me to actually come back to Shireroth to update everyone on how she is doing. (I know, I've been gone for a while.)

She is in the hospital, in a great deal of pain (but staying her cheerful self), and appreciates everyone's continued prayers and good wishes. She will likely be there for no less than 3 weeks, longer depending on her rate of healing.

She gave us quite a scare today, and was moved to the ICU, but when I left her this evening she was completely stable and her pain was under control. That's been a very hard thing to be able to say, to be honest, but morphine is a good thing. She may even be able to sleep a decent amount, which has also been a concern,

I will spare everyone the gory details of her condition, but feel free to IM me if you are curious. Warning: not for the faint of heart.

I will be monitoring this thread for responses, and let mom know that everyone cares.

Thanks, everyone, for all of your support. It really does mean a great deal to all of us, especially my mom. She cares a lot about you guys!

Welcome back, Hypatia! I'm glad to see you here! :)

I get tears in my eyes if I think about Carol in the hospital. I would give a lot to visit her once (but I don't know her in RL so it would just be weird, and my place of residence doesn't permit it). :(

Ok, further update.

Mom's condition is more stable today, and she has been moved out of the ICU, though they are still monitoring her a bit more than they were before. Her pain level seems mostly under control today, though she's definitely not what I'd call "comfortable". She is doing way better than she was yesterday, even before she was moved to ICU. Her doctors seem very on top of the situation and working to do all they can, so all we can do is hope and pray, and wait.

She was very pleased when I told her about everyone's responses, and how much you all care about her.

Update!

There isn't much to update, except that my mom is still in the hospital, healing (very) slowly and receiving the care she needs.

Her major challenges still include pain management, and she continues to appreciate everyone's prayers and good wishes.

There have not been any new "scares" or dramatic setbacks since the last one I posted right after she got to the hospital, and I really don't expect there to be any more in the foreseeable future. Just a long, slow improvement until she is past this current issue.

Thank you. We now return you to your regularly scheduled de-mangoing.

UPDATE

Ok, this is a harder update to make. Mom's condition is not good.

[[[Skip gory details if you want to]]]
She is in the hospital for treatment of a couple of severe wounds that became infected. They are basically gigantic bedsores that developed because she was in so much pain that her comfortable positions became overly limited, and as a result of other complicating health issues. She would be slow to heal in the best of circumstances as a result of her diabetes, but these are not the best of circumstances.

She went into surgery today because her wound care doctor needed to debride the wounds and remove dead tissue. I heard the word "gangrene" go by multiple times. General anesthesia is dangerous for her, though thankfully she got through this procedure very well. (A bit of extra time in recovery due to excess weight holding onto the anesthetic, but mom was alert and in good spirits when I left.) Still, the surgeon did not want to give us the wrong impression, and did underscore just how risky the procedure would be for her (even though it is relatively simple), and her prognosis. He does not believe she can heal from what's wrong with her, and is convinced that she will simply continue to get infections in areas of tissue that do not have proper blood supplies (as a result of other complications that started in earnest earlier this year).
[[[End gory details]]]

Mom's surgeon was very frank about her prognosis. It is not good. He is not convinced she will leave the hospital, because she has so many health problems ganging up on her, and she has had various health issues come up in the last 5-7 years that have caused severe repercussions and still influence how she is doing now. She is still young (turning 59 at the end of this month), but her kidneys are absolutely shot, and she has other systems going haywire. She is young and her heart is not about to give out on her, but even so it's very dangerous for her, and they can only do so much. He is going to push her main doctor to transfer her to one of the big, fancy research hospitals in the region (Stanford or UCSF medical centers), where they will have the appropriate specialists she needs, as well as a pain specialist. Pain control is our family's number one priority for her. Mom's surgeon could not and would not give us an estimate on how long she has left, but he does not believe she will recover from this. I am estimating no less than a month (after her birthday), knowing my mom's psyche and more about how she reacts to crises.

We appreciate everyone's love and support through this, especially mom. If anyone wants to call me and potentially arrange a visit with her or get an address to send cards, my phone number is (510) 501-1294. PLEASE call me first. She is in the San Francisco Bay Area, at Washington Hospital in Fremont. She has been very concerned about some members of Shireroth, who I am sure know who they are. To those people, please, message me.

As always, I am available on AIM for Q&A if necessary, as littleribbit2003, and yahoo as little_ribbit_2003. Message me if you feel the need. I do not check my Shireroth PMs every day.

This is indeed terrible news. I obviously don't check all the forums here, so didn't see this until now.

Having lost my grandmother, who was very near and dear to me, almost a year ago to-date to a long battle with cancer, this certainly hits home. My best to you and your mom, Renee - here's hoping for the best.

I only wish I could give more than mere verbal support. :(

Hypatia, can you please send the address to FlyingIslands#hotmail, com? Though we were only in the hobby together for a short while (I was on the way out when she was on the rise) I've always respected a great deal of things about her, and definately wish to make sure she knows about it if her time is short.
