What do the houses do?

That is a good question. The system is still very new, but we organize the land we hold, decide on internal matters, and the Duke of the House (currently me) sits in the Landsraad (our Parliament). I am one of only two Dukes in total at the moment.

Welcome. I am pleased to approve your application for citizenship. I'm sure we had an official stamp for this sort of thing. No idea what happened to it, I can only assume my predecessor ate it. Now for your first act as citizen I advise you not to read our Getting Started guide which is only five years out of date and liable to leave you even more confused than you are already. Instead try the Guide for the Perplexed, which is a mere six months out of date and therefore stands a reasonable chance of being valid, in places.

Best of all, be sure to drop into the chat and say hi. Everyone's very friendly and willing to help you with any queries you might have. Except Icebreaker, but he's sorta like an unofficial, albeit demeaning, mascot that has inexplicably established himself as an integral part of the community, so don't worry about it. It is also best not to ask me any questions directly as my answers may be misleading, misanthropic or both.

It'll all become self-evident distressingly quickly. Have fun, try not to insult any ethnic or religious minorities that don't deserve it and I'm sure you'll get on famously.

What are the autonomous houses then?

I am looking into House Mortis, if any.

Autonomous houses are minor houses that are not under a major house. There are two major houses, Kalir and Tosha-Straylight, and three minor houses. Mortis, Annexis and Tosha-Straylight are on the verge of confederating into a major house tho, so it would probably not matter much which one of those houses you joined, and you could always switch later on.
