Harald, I need you to read the stuff here and edit your post to comply with that. I suggest that other people treat this as a non-event until then so that his edits don't affect anything anyone else has done.

Viking Fury II

Post by sovereignvikingemperor »

The Sea Raven fighters of the Sleipnir Squadron of the Imperial Naval Air Service of Stormark sat at their dispersal points on the runway of the Harald Hardrada Naval Air Base near Thorfinnsborg, waiting. The elegant swept wing fighter was smaller and more lightly armed than the Babkhan Ashavan or the monstrous Halluci "Fire Breathers" that were currently tearing each other apart in the skies above Terre Des Riches. However that was balanced against the Sea RavenÂ’s greater manoeuvrability and rate of climb. The Fire-Breather was a machete while the Sea Raven was afinely balanced rapier, the Shirerithian fighter could cause brutal wounds, but the Sea Raven in the hands of a skilled operator could kill deftly in a manner that was almost artistic. The Sea Raven harked back to the golden age of aerial combat, before the current era ofsoulless push button technological slaughter. That said the Sea Raven had the performance of a modern fighter, it was not one of those strange relics seen chugging along over the skies of Lusatia or one of the other Gotzborg colonies. The Sea Raven functioned primarily as a carrier based interceptor but reasons of operational efficiency had caused it to be modified to carry up to 2,205 poundsof bombs or 12 135-mm (5.3-inch) Bofors rockets. Its primary armaments were four medium-ranged air-to-airmissiles and two wing mounted 30–mm cannons. At the fighter planes dispersal points each individual aircraft was being fuelled and armed by frantic ground staff while the professional but untested naval pilots sat strapped into their cockpits awaiting the order to go. A ground take off was something they had not undertaken operationally since graduating from advanced fighter training at Kaupang. Most pilots had good memories of their time in training, taking the jet-trainer on low level and illicit flights over the Hurmu lakes and amongst the forests of the crater. Low level flying at sea and over the land had been what had built their nerve as fighter pilots and they considered themselves to be some of the best in the world. As naval service pilots the Sleipnir Squadron was usually assigned to carrier groups, indeed somehad seen service in the recent short intervention inTreisenberg. However the coastal waters around Jaris were no place for vulnerable carriers and the distances such that naval aviation could use Stormark itself as its premier carrier. One by one the ground crews gave the ok signal to the pilots that their planes were fuelled and ready to go. The Lieutenant Commander in command taking the lead the fighters began to taxi out of their hardened dispersal sites and line up to take their turn to launch off the main runway. Lt Cdr Olaf Gustavsson was the first into the air leading the first flight of five into the early morning sky, his was the main strike package, armed with one Mark 84 2,000 bomb each in addition to their standard air-combat weapons. Lieutenant Sven Birger led the next flight of five airborne; these were armed with 12 135 mm rockets for strafing in the wake of the bombers. Finally Lieutenant Harald Pettersson led the rear five fighters, these were the escort package whose bomb pods had beensubstantially modified to carry four AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles. After climbing to an initial cruising height of 5,000 ft the force turned due west and dropped low to 500 ft over the Island of Talamthom, which though technically neutral was in fact an allied and non-belligerent friend to both the Grand Commonwealth and Stormark. Pushing their thrust towards the mach 2 limit of the Sea RavenÂ’s capability the force of 15 aircraft crossed the western shore of Talamthom and now ducked down to a pants wetting 60 ft above sea level, a great test of nerve for the carrier pilots but essential to avoid detection. Not every one in the sky that day was seeking to avoid attention. For another five Sea Ravens under Lieutenant Thor Christiansen detection was the name of the game for they, having taken off a half hour after the main party were on the luckless wild weasel mission, using themselves as bait to draw up whatever was left on Jaris into combat.Half an hour after crossing the Talamthom western shore the force under Lt Cdr Gustavsson crossed the hostile shore of Jaris. The target was Philban, the mission to complete the objectives of the aborted raid the day before. The pilots were keen now to prove themselves in the eyes of their allies, especially the 11th Tactical Air Force who had been out every night since the war began, and the moment of decision was at hand. If they were successful now, the invasion could go ahead. They would have proved themselves equal to the finest the rest of Micras had to offer.Emperor Harald Thorstein nervously walked up and down his luxurious room at Harald Hardrada Naval Air Base. He was awaiting news of the arrival of the Sleipnir Squadron in Jaris. For first time in history Vikings would engage in air combat. The Squadron was instructed by coalition command was to systematically devastate the physical infrastructure of the city of Philban so as to challenge the Shirerithians for control of the skies and to cause a break down in civil society and military efficiency on the island itself.Stormark had spent billions of Stormarkian Crowns on its Naval Air Service, which had to build from scratch, after threats from the Neo-USSR. Ultra-modern Sea Raven fighters had been purchased, air bases had been erected and the best instructors had been hired. The result was an air force that the Emperor sincerely believed that could eclipse any other air force on Micras. Now it finally was going be put to the test, which He was positive the Sleipnir Squadron would gloriously pass. The question was whether the Shirerithians would be suicidal enough to challenge the Sea Raven fighters. Indeed should they try contingencies existed to ensure victory.A knock on the door. "Come in". An Ensign appeared and saluted. "Your Imperial Majesty, the Sleipnir Squadron has arrived at Jaris and has started to carry out its mission."It's Hammer time.Summary: 10 Sea Ravens are on course to hit Philban. Another five are escorting while a further five are on an intruder mission to stir up JarisÂ’ air defences.&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp Edited by: sovereignvikingemperor  at: 8/14/05 8:38

Emperor Harald Thorstein was in his room anxiously waiting for news on the mission of the Sleipnir Squadron. Would they have succeeded on their maiden mission?A knock on the door. "Come in". A young Lieutenant stepped into the room. "Your Imperial Majesty, the Sleipnir Squadron has, without encountering any enemy resistence, succesfully bombed the Air Field at Philban putting the runway and the main buildings out of commission."
