Infact its more the opposite, The Treaty of Waitangi was signed by the British Crown and many Maori chiefs - it ceeded soverignty over New Zealand to the British and made us part of the Empire. Although the two versions (english and Maori) were slightly different because of bad translation so there debate about if the chiefs actually knew what they were doing.
