List of Hyperborean proverbs

Post by Scott of Hyperborea »

To be added to as more come up:

"Koinachinang aKadamin"
("You can't say that in Kadamic")
Meaning: "That's utter nonsense"
Explanation: Kadamic is the holy language of Hyperborea, constructed to make it impossible to say unclear or misleading statements. To say of something that it can't be translated into Kadamic is to say that the whole statement has no content besides muddled nonsense.

"Ku, araph dromoaphithang Kassi Elution Kondromon and, rhae koinomal akramuith."
("And if Kassi Elution hadn't lit the Sun Beacon, we'd be having this conversation in the dark.")
Meaning: "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride"
Explanation: The proverb says that there's no use wishing for things to be otherwise or remarking on what might have been. Kassi Elution is a mythical hero who lit the Sun Beacon, bringing day and night into the world. If your friend says "If I'd made a different last move, I totally would have won that game," you can reply "Yes, and if Kassi Elution hadn't lit the Sun Beacon, we'd be having this conversation in the dark."

"Aphimi dakti ivujonal aramirjalart"
("Let the icicles fall where they will")
Meaning: "The die is cast"
Explanation: Everything is set and predestined, and all that remains to do is wait and see how things turn out. Famously uttered by Nixuth Mekir as he forged his plans for the War of the Wylthean Succession.

"Peri aniyrus"
("Like a walrus")
Meaning: Badly, barbarically, or using only brute force
Explanation: Usually used to mock someone for not being very subtle or intellectual. For example, "Manisanikoin Bil peri aniyrus", meaning "Bill negotiates like a walrus" is more or less equivalent to "Manisanikoin Bil peri achadam zadimel" = "Bill has the diplomatic skills of a random rock."

"Mai ji Mongi Uephrangion"
("It's not the king of fishes")
Meaning: "It's not kosher", "It's not what we wanted."
Explanation: Vague, mythological, and lost in the mists of time.
