For whatever it's worth to this discussion, I offer a cleaned-up version of the old flag for inspection, produced through the magic of vector graphics. The colors are negotiable, because it's hard to get them looking quite right, but:

I like the one of Shyriath more. CJ's one looks too much as a version made in Paint, it isn't as nifty as the one of Shyriath (sorry, CJ, don't want to hurt your feelings). If I had to chose, it would be Shyriat's flag version.

Shyriath's looks horrible. The bars are too thin, the brown is too purple, the blue is too light, and the thing in the middle is a square. Plus mine was made in Paint.NET, which is far superior to Paint. Also vector flags ftl.

Eh, yeah. The bars are supposed to be thin, not wide. The colors can be tweaked more but are meant to be more harmonious than in the old version. And I can't really figure out where you get the idea that the white thing is a square. Look at the old flag more than once, will you? And, seriously, vector graphics is far superior to Paint.NET anyway.

The whole thing isn't a square but it looks like it maybe was intended to be. If you look closely at the bars it's pretty obvious they were drawn with the line tool with a pen size up pretty high. See how the green and brown ones overlap the red and yellow ones a bit? Line tools bigger than a pixel create those rounded edges at the end which overlapped the white square (almost certainly drawn first, or at the least before the green and brown bars) likely out of a lack of cleanup effort.

I'd like to see if Erik can confirm or deny that.

The point of this exercise was to change the flag, particularly the shapes and proportions in the flag, as little as possible in the process of cleaning it up. To this end, I imported an image of the old flag and used it as a layer in CorelDRAW and basically traced over it; the bars are as thin as they are because, proportionally, that's how about how thin they were in the base image. And likewise with the funky white thing in the middle. The only structural change was that the cleanup got re-centered, since things seemed to be slightly off-center in the old one.

As I said, the colors are negotiable. For some reason, the base image doesn't look like it kept its proper colors after being imported, and I haven't figured out how to fix that, so I was emulating colors that were already a bit hosed to begin with; I have no objections to tweaking them, if interested parties can come to an agreement on what colors they'd like, or at least a range of color options.

Maybe not 1024x640. Maybe if you resized it to a standard size like 2:1 (1000x500) or 3:5 (1000x600)...

3:5, I think, if going for a standard size. Dunno why, but 2:1 flags always irked me. Too long to be compact, not long enough to be graceful.

Re: colors - back when we had the original discussion, a lot of people agreed the idea of encoding our foundation date in the flag color (ie using R:4 G:24 B:200 for the blue) was pretty cute.

Other than that, I really like the colors in that flag of Bill's I posted above. The brown actually looks okay instead of disgusting.

If we're feeling exceptionally cute, R:24 G:200 B:4 and R:200 G:24 B:4 make some pretty solid greens and reds, respectively, though the green is a bit lighter than we're used to.
