Gareth ArthurI hope to look into the changing attitudes of micronational communities concerning punishments for criminal offences and, generally, the role of trial and punishment in an online micronation. In the past, for some serious crimes, citizens and foreigners have been banned, permnanently or temporarily, for spying, treason &c. I will examine why this was course of action was taken, and why it is not as prevalent anymore. Further, I want to look at the reaction of communities to smaller, less "important" offences. Sometimes, actions which are by statutory definition criminal are recorded explicitly on the national forums are completely ignored and go unpunished. I will look at why this is and whether it is right or not. My research will be substantiated by historical records in micronations where developed legal structures have existed for some time, such as Shireroth, Antica, Babkha and Stormark, as well as some micronations where legal structures were less well thought-through, such as New Britannia.
