OrBats

It began as a "Khanflict" (complete with its own lexicon of dreadful puns) over the fate of Goldshire. The Gods however mock the efforts of puny mortals to construct a coherent narrative, and so it has become instead a struggle for the very soul of Shireroth itself, between on the one hand the loyalist forces of Kaiser Aurangzeb and on the other the Coalition (or Confederated Subdivision Alliance... if you really must...) who keenly anticipate the emergence of a Kaiser Leto III.

OrBats

Post by Scott of Hyperborea »

Thus sayeth the QUARREL Manual:
Each QUARREL commander starts with $75, and zir goal is to spend this money to create as useful and versatile a force as possible. The workhorses of the QUARREL unit system are the nine basic unit templates. Each is limited to either land, sea, or air, and each has a particular attack strength, bombardment ability, speed, and cost. These are:

[Name (strength/speed/range) $cost]

Infantry (1/50), $1
Armor (4/150) $5
Artillery (3/50/50) $2 (can only bombard)
Copter (2/200) $5
SpecOps (?/?) $5

Small Warship (1/700/50) $2
Large Warship (4/500/50) $6
Carrier (0/500) $10 (cannot fight; can carry 5 planes)

Fighter (*/800/400) $4 (*1 if attacking ground or sea units, 6 in aerial combat)
Bomber (*/800/400) $8 (*6 if attacking ground units, 0 in aerial combat)
There are more complicated ways to design an OrBat including unit modifications and custom units. If you want to bother with these, you can find them in the QUARREL Manual.

Once you've designed your OrBat, please post it here.

Yeah. Any unit that cannot be created by using the base units with or without official ability modifications is considered a custom unit that will have to be approved by a judge. No information was provided on the soldiers so we can't make a judgment call on them right now.

Acceptable, though I feel morally obligated to warn you that your total OrBat only has a total power of 30. Compare that to an OrBat of 75 $1 basic infantry and you would have your head handed to you amazingly fast. Special abilities are neat, but you'd be best be able you can justify every one of them.

Harvey is very, very, very right.

Also, I haven't explained paradropping in QUARREL very well, and I'll get around to it, but you don't want to try it without air superiority. You may want to check to make sure that your side's going to be able to provide that for you.

I was under the impression that 75 points was 75 points was 75 points. That's the way it's always been, where everyone was equal in power and it was up to plotting and scheming to win.

75 points is 75 points is 75 points indeed. But not all uses of points are equal in every situation. For example, if you created an all-navy OrBat with your points, you wouldn't be able to do much about land battles. It is the same with units that have a lot of special abilities. They may be highly mobile and useful, but sooner or later you may want a straight fight, and all of a sudden you'll find that being able to drop from a helecopter doesn't matter when you're outnumbered 3 to 1 on land. It's up to the players to decide how if they spend their points on quality or quantity; personally, I recommend a subtle mix of the two.

Have you ever played Civilization, or any other game where units have attack value, defense value, and special abilities? It's kind of like that. Keep in mind that this is all going into a computer program. The computer program doesn't care how many points you gave your units, it cares what their various stats and abilities are.

I'm on Harvey's side with:

5 Ground Strike fighters for $25.
5 Reinforced Armor for $30
1 Copter for $5

...adding to $60 for the above mentioned reasons. The rest of you still get $75.

I am going to go slightly crazy if infantry units are being referred to as "infantrymen" when they are weighted to equal 10,000 actual soldiers (inference from Scott at any rate), which is like a full-blown division.

So for instance Harvey has 30 infantry divisions, ten artillery batteries and two special ops teams... I know, kinda irrelevent but there is a narrative side to this and I want to be sure that I'm conceiving the scale of things properly.

Yeah, okay, I'll put it on the list of things to change.

Since you said you'd played Alpha Centauri, think of it as similar to that game or to Civ: one infantry "unit" represents however many actual people.

By Multi-Role Fighter Squadron, do you in fact mean "Generic Fighters"?

EDIT: Oh, of course you do. You guys can't see the available upgrades, can you?

And now my orbat, kindly assembled using my battle/orbat generator:

1 Large_Warship ($6)
1 Carrier (S) ($14)
9 Fighter (A) ($54)
1 Infantry ($1)

at a total cost of 75.

Melangia still has money. For reference (S) after Carrier indicates that its a Super Carrier (capable of carrying 12 planes instead of 5). (A) after Fighter indicates they have Air Superiority (9 strength instead of 6).

Multi-role as in can fire missiles, will drop bombs... not necessarily the best in show for either ... strengthening other areas would result in interceptor or more purely specialised ground attack aircraft like what Scott has.
