One for those who want to validate their existence

Post by Ari Rahikkala »

Not the kind of judgement that I would personally pass, but I find this sort of assholish and unfair setting of dealbreaker thresholds amusing in general:

I think the first one is someone from star trek. I never really watched it. I assume the second one is a media-slut?

I can't even figure out how to validate my copy of Windows, and now I'm expected to validate my existence?

The first one is a redshirt cast member of Star Trek and therefore useless.

The second one is a cast member of Jersey Shore, which I despise, and therefore worthless.

It's a redshirt standing in front of a space-themed backdrop. QED.

Er, the vast majority of writers I really like I can't recognize on sight from a photograph. The only reason I recognize Sagan is that there was a picture of him on Reddit for some reason a little while ago. Doesn't mean I don't know who he is. I've got no clue what JK Rowling looks like, but doesn't mean I never read Harry Potter.

This.

I know full well who Carl Sagan is, I just don't remember what he looks like. Too much MythBusters and not enough PBS :document

I don't know both... and Carl Sagan? Who's Carl Sagan? And what's MythBusters?! :fish :p

So...what you're saying is...people who learn about science by reading books...instead of by watching TV shows with a famous scientist in them...don't deserve to exist??

In Belgium, our life is boring enough without a scientist appearing on the screen... :p

No, I'm just saying that, unlike many writers and scientists, he got a lot of exposure on public television, and therefore ought to be more recognizable than you give him credit for.

I watch like 3 hours of TV a week, and it's not the kind of shows that has scientists appearing on them. But sure.

I recognized Sagan actually but as Scott mentioned, it is entirely possible to have been exposed to Sagan entirely though the print medium rather than seeing him on TV. Since I generally get most of my information through text (reading books or the internet) rather than through videos (youtube or television or whatever), I think Scott has a point.

It's a two part thing, though. Recognize Snookie but not Carl Sagan. If you recognize neither, you're okay. If you only recognize Snookie, you're watching the wrong television programming.

I find the arrogance of intellectuals who look down upon popular culture to be both shallow and pedantic.

This. Seriously, this. I didn't recognize either by picture, and in fact I couldn't have told you who Carl Sagan was by name alone, though now that I've looked up his bio I am familiar with a fair amount of his life's work. But mostly I just think it's stupid and petty to knock things that are popular for being substance-lacking when even stuffy intellectuals need downtime and don't want to have to focus and concentrate on deep, mysterious secrets of the universe all hours of the evening.

I'm pleased to know it was Carl Sagen. I don't have any special claim to why I know.. I just happen to have seen a picture and some video of him once... the media-slut... no idea.. Linzy Lohand? Fuck if I know.

Sagan died in 1996. I remember watching "Cosmos" on PBS when it came out.

More to the point of the selection procedure in Ari's message, in ancient daysw the Ex- said that she left because we didn't barbeque enough.

Which puts her closer to picture #2, not that it matters.

She dumped/divorced you cause you didn't BBQ enough? Isn't that easy to fix. She could learn to BBQ, herself.

That was the only reason she would give. Eight years in the toilet. But my life is SOOOOOOOO much better since she left. :D
.......to BBQ, herself.
And as far as I'm concerned, she can BBQ herself. :D :party

After comments like that, I miss Ardy.
