A question about intuition wrt. vacuous truths

Post by Ari Rahikkala »

Suppose I have an urn capable of holding blue and red balls. It currently contains no balls. How would you answer these questions:

Are all of the balls in the urn blue?
Are any of the balls in the urn blue?
No-one should be without a parasol, Sirocco.

1. Yes, but if you try to use this in a natural conversation, I reserve the right to smack you
2. No

Note: intuition possibly not valid as it was filtered through class discussions on existential import several years ago.

1. Undefined.
2. Undefined.

Until there is anything in the urn, the answer is undefined. Like dividing by Zero. My first reaction was to say No to both.

The balls are neither blue or red, but purple.

The extant colors are to be determined by simple majority vote of the Landsraad. :document
