Let's let everyone here "own" land. In some American states, landowners can voter on certain LOCAL things, bond issues, HOA (hom-owners association) kind of rules, based on whether you own land in the jurisdiction.

Even foreigners.

Run it by consensus, no nasty voting and all.

Condominium sounds nice. But no voting? But how do you get the head of governement appointed?

All of the "Landowners" (Vrieholderen?) could meet together in a big barn (what's the Dutch/Afrikaaner word for barn?) Dutch is Schuur, according to google. iEgad, that would make it der Groote Schuur...............

The Vryholder or Staadholder would be chosen by consensus. Everybody could argue until it was time to eat and drink, or play rounders or some such.

Arguments would continue until one side saw the logic of the other, got bored, or were mysteriously drug off into the outback (achterland?) and "persuaded", usually by mild threats, alcohol, or financial considerations.

Culture would be quasi-rural. A sapling of Malarbor and a statue of Ardy should be planted near the port, to intimidate foreigners.

Maraguoans could have Freedom in all things, foreign affairs and defence would be run jointly by the Kaiser and the King, but that would be the limit of their powers.

I'm starting to see the best of the Voortrekkers added to sturdy Australian/Minnesota farmers, stirred liberally with the Amish. Add some Alan Copeland and a dash of Sooners to taste.

In dutch 'the big barn' is 'de Grote Schuur'. However, I think it's 'Groote Schuur' in African, and I don't mind using the African translation.
