Honourable Councillors of Eliria,

We have an important decision to make, what the non-warcraft name for these lands shall be called.

Our eminent kaiser proposes that we change it to Eluin, but that for me is an ugly word. Adding an a to it might give it some goodities. --> Eluina

But here is an idea...

The old Norse name for river is elfR (elf-), in modern Nordic languages elvur, elfur,älv and elv. The suffix for female or goddess is "ynja", in modern Nordic languages "inde", "inna" and "ynja".

Combining these elements give us "Elfynja" (Icelandic), "Elvynja" (Faroese), Elvinde (Danish), "Elvinne" or Elvinna in Norwegian, and Älvinna in Swedish.

However, it could be possible that the Elw and Elfinshi influence the name of the goddess.

Also,in the Hyperborean I learnt, Lewen was the word for Elwynn. Other words I know are Andurelw (land of the Elw), Elwys. "Andurelwys" looks good.

Just a few ideas.

Lewen is obsolete Kadhamic Hyperborean; the Duchy itself is called Lirikoth, but I wouldn't want to Hyperboreanize over Elwynnese culture.

I'd rather avoid anything that sounds too closely derived from "elf" or "elven" just because those have bad associations for me - which rules out "elfynja" and the like. Andurelw sounds too Tolkienesque (Anduril was the name of Aragorn's sword).

Elvinde isn't bad. Maybe make it something like Ellvinde so it looks less elf-y? We can also go for other things that sounds like "Elwynn" when pronounced, like Ellwin or something. I'd also be happy with Duchy of Eliria.

Eliria is a good compromise, but what we need to discuss its not only the name of the lands (former duchy), but also the river and the goddess, and the relationship between these three. Its an inherent part of our culture.

Which makes it a lot more complicated than just making Goldshire Goldenmoon.

The "a" doesn't really do it for me. Makes it look too Olde English, for some reason. I wish we could get something pronounced the same as Elwynn. Does Elluwin set off your ugly word detector? Elluvin?

One more thing I just noticed - "Ellwyn" has a lot of Google results, none of which are Warcraft. If Brookshire was willing to change their name, we could totally just do "Ellwyn" without anyone being able to prove a Warcraft connection.
