New flag

Post by Scott of Hyperborea »

Antica has mocked our flag. I'm not so concerned about how bad our flag is, but it bothers me to see the Anticans ever be right about something, because it might lead them to believe they're right about other things and then they'll get even cockier. Therefore, I believe we should change our flag.

Should I even bother trying to think up another design, or are people just opposed in principle to this as usual?

Nope. Oddly enough, I support it. Our flag is horrible, and I've wanted to get rid of it ever since it was created. To me, the flag had screamed of a newbie micronation - while it would have been good six years ago when Shireroth was subordinate to Jasonia, it doesn't work now, at all.

Your flag is as ugly as homemade sin. It looks like it was thrown together on MSPaint.

I refuse to change this hallowed flag! I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CHANGE IT!

Besides, changing it will just make them feel vindicated.

Besides,

THEIR flag sucks too. :no

The Dinarchy flag was better, in my opinion.

I'd like to know why the Republic/Dinarchy/Antica in general's flag has a bird with wings that look like folded sheets of paper or missiles.

Octavius found the picture, and stuck the shield on the front. I believe there's lots of symbolism in it, but I don't really remember what it was. :smashy

I like the Dinarchy flag.

Andwhile I am one for keeping tradition. In this perios of Shireroth's history, the rules are different.

Maybe a new flag would be ok.

You know, this is exactly like when we wanted to change the forum colors - everyone outside the site thought what we had was ugly, a lot of people inside agreed, but no one actually came up with anything better at the time. :P

(Although, to be fair, I DID spend time tweaking the red text to a point where Fax could actually read it without hurting his eyes, aparently being the only one to recognize that it hurt him :P)

I grabbed a picture from somewhere the eagle from Moldovia's flag, heavily edited it, and replaced its head with the head from another, more well known, eagle symbol. The symbol on the shield essentially translates (or is intended to translate) as: Peace (white) cutting through Darkness (black) through the use of fortified military might (embattled pale) by two great, autocratic persons (fasces).

For once, I actually agree with keeping history intact.

Stick with the flag we've got.

I agree. We should leave the flag alone. It looks a bit lame, yes, but it is not so bad as to replace such an old symbol, for as arbitrary a reason as someone making fun of it.

But it's simply ugly. Even the colors are tacky, in addition to a childish composition.

From Erik's journal...
My cantacts inform me Shireroth is talking of changing the flag... idiots.. fools... All of them. I wish I could just go in and shut that place down. They have made a mockery of what it once was. Destroy the last and oldest symbol of the nation... yeah.. that's a good idea... I really thought better of them... wait.. no I didn't.. Oh well. Not my problem anymore.. I hate that place... I wish it would just die and stop pulling something I was once proud of through the mud... It really does make me sad to see them do this....

Oh, now this totally sucks. On one hand, I like the old flag, but on the other hand, changing it would piss off Erik because he can never let go of Shireroth and is sore that he is no longer the leader of the nation. Either one pleases me...

regardless of what ANYONE said, founder or mocker, i say the flag is fine.

"it looks dumb" "its old" "its not cool enough"

BAH!

take a look at the old world flags of real nations.

Switzerland? RED! uh.. With a big white cross!!

Germany? er... 3 bars of colors on top of each other.. ya! almost conquered the world twice, our flag looks like a 2 year old could make it.

Britain? lets just put all the flags from our subordinate nations on one, yeah X's!! and t's!!

The Shirerithiian flag is fine. if it aint Baroque, dont fix it.

On the site used to aid in judging the flags, the 3 you mentioned are pretty high up..

Also, That makes me sad to see Erik so bitter. The country is changing yes, but dragging it through the mud? Wow, that's pretty bitter...

Priceless observation (though I got used to it incredibly quickly over the past days).

How much control do the admins of Shireroth have over this installation of phpBB? Has a different template been considered? Just to drag the topic up again briefly. Providing, of course, it's not taboo for illegal immigrants to discuss such things.

Re: Flags. I find them really hard to come up with. It's hard to create something that still looks distinctly flag-like, but doesn't just recreate the three-stripe (or other common) themes. So this issue has my sympathies.

I'm fairly sure we can control graphics and colors and more or less everything except things that require access to the code itself, since Greg Dean is so kindly hosting the forums for free.

A different template would require a method of file uploading (FTP or otherwise), so I assume that's off-limits...

Well we still have our own webspace and could upload it there, it's just on a different server than this and we'd have to link it.

That won't work (as far as I know) - it needs to be in the database here, and locally accessible, the forum needs to be able to open the files, not just read them over the web. I think. I'm not sure how flexible templating is with phpBB, though.
