Has history been lost?

Post by Prince Ísur-Ai »

Just going through old threads, I mean the old ones, I find that many posts, often the initial ones, have been cut. The same threads I looked at a week ago have had their information partially lost. Just click here to see how Shyriath's history's been messed up.

I wonder how this happened and if it's fixable in anyway...

There are many like that in the Kildarian forum.

The given example post exists in its full form in the database on the old forum. Current hypothesis: The move from ezboard left some sort of terrible non-utf8 characters all over the database. MySQL in its infinite wisdom decided to act like only MySQL would and instead of, say, giving some sort of indication something might be going wrong, just silently truncated the data. Possible solution: Reimport the posts from, say, before 2006, in a cleaned-up form. Good thing I have monday free...

The old posts should be back now. Is this the case?

It messed up several more recent topics like this one. It's no disaster, but the '-symbol is changed in ’.
And there is something weird going on with some quotes...

Maybe we should declare victory and move on?

I might look into it at a later date if I'm in a suitably fey mood, but it's readable so it's good enough for now.
