For the average user, I'd say there's one major thing to note about (at least some) Linux distros: the ease of finding and installing new software. So much is out there, and a lot of it is already available through a nice interface in packages that go right into your system, without having to search...

If you're a newbie to Linux, I might suggest Ubuntu Linux. It's a good distro for people switching from Windows. I started off with it, and now I'm starting to move away that I'm more familiar with Linux.
