The Imperial Army is the principal land warfare force of the Imperial Republic of Shireroth. The force is administered by the Ministry of Military Affairs. The professional head of the Imperial Army is the Magister Primum, who is head of the Collegium Magistri Militum or College of the Magisters (i.e. the General Staff).

Formation and Structure

The structure of the Imperial Army is relatively streamlined into administrative divisions and operational legions. A legion of five regiments will have at least two core regiments that pertain to its mission function as well as any additional squadrons or troops required to perform operationally. A legion on operations will typically be reinforced by additional auxiliaries subject to its particular circumstances and objectives, in which case it therefore becomes the beating heart of a battle group, known as a vexillatio. For comparative purposes a Legion is broadly equivalent to a Brigade level formation in the Elwynnese Union Defence Force, although the UDF typically maintains fewer more overpowered fighting formations than the Imperial Army, in line with its doctrine of making short, sharp and decisive interventions. The doctrine of the Imperial Army on the other hand is typically to hold and stabilise territory after enemy formations have been disrupted thoroughly by the strategic forces of the Imperial Republic.

Legions may be transferred into and out of administrative Divisions and Corps which are broadly territorial in character. The Armies to which these formations are assigned - Field, Frontier and River - define their general mission, offensive and defensive respectively.

The Palatini Corps remains independent of the three armies and is especially concerned with the defence of the Imperial County and Shirekeep, having evolved out of the Kaiser's old bodyguards - the Order of Kampioens and the Apollonian Guard.

By a minor historical quirk, the Kaiser's personal bodyguard, the Kampioen Guards, was for a time placed under the command of the Imperial Navy. After the re-establishment of the Imperial Army, the Kampioen Guards were re-brigaded into the Old Guard as part of the Palatini Corps of the Imperial Army.
The Kampioens were supplanted in their role by the Order of the Sentinels, which reported to the Kaiser directly and sat entirely outside the structure of the Imperial Forces.

The comitatenses comprised the field army of the Imperial Republic, capable of dispatch to conduct fully mobile, mechanised and expeditionary warfare, in contrast to the primarily defensive frontier troops.

Recruitment and Training

The Imperial Army recruits exclusively from Shirekeep and the Imperial Dominions as well as any territory that they might temporarily occupy, such as Goldshire during the period of martial law.

Recruitment can include the taking in of volunteers, but also frequently relies upon forms of impressment, notably the Press-Gang. This Press-Gang, also known as the Impressment Service operated on a large scale with a force of men in likely river ports and towns in the Imperial County and Mishalan. These men were armed and possessed "warrants" from the MoMA for their operations. Their "catches" were conveyed to Receiving Ships in the midstream of the Blue and White branches of the Elwynn which then, when their cargo holds are full, take their "haul" downriver and out to sea - eventually depositing them on the island of Zy-Rodun for personality adjustment, indoctrination and basic training.

History

The Imperial Army campaigned in the Civil War in Goldshire where its poor performance against an ill-equipped and fractious alliance of rebels prompted a review of its organisation and structure. In 1644 the Kaiser Dominus decreed an increase in the allocation of manpower to the Imperial Army, increasing its size from 275,000 personnel across 347 regiments to 600,000 personnel in 500 regiments. The same decree mandated for the first time the establishment of 100 Imperial Legions, as the brigade strength fighting formations of the Imperial Army.
