Pro hosting for life?
http://www.brinkster.com/sales/i...nding.aspxShould we go for it? WE could definately host forums on that kind of server, as well as a wiki, and anything else we wanted. And we'd only pay once. They call it a signature, but no one ever signs their posts...

Oooooh, shiny... although $299 is, even if it seems fairly reasonable for a one-time fee, a lot to scrounge up all at once. We'd need to start raising some funds.

Re: Pro hosting for life?
I can donate $20 or so at any one time, and if we're collecting the donations over the course of a year or so I can probably do double that.(by the way, we can't use the Chest for anything other than EZBoard, IIRC)

http://www.brinkster.com/Hosting...ional.aspxThe plan we'de be getting...I could make the arangements.. to have it all set up when the current side goes down... I'de have to talk to aplus.net... but someone needs to do some research into this brinkster company..Get the Linux server.... too.. hehe.. life is easier on a linux server...with perl.... cgi.. MySQL... nice..nice.. 3gigs.. nice.. hmm... Very interesting...I need someone to research the company a bit.. but as of now...This has my support. When people get me the money.. I'll make the arrangements.. E. Metzler (UEC)Duke of Brookshire"Never use a BOO/\/\ist as a diplomat" -- GSClicky Clicky..., Tiss for your own good ya know.

Re: Pro hosting for life?
I've had free hosting at Brinkster for years and seen nothing wrong, and I've never heard bad things about them. I also went over the fine print and talked with a customer service person and there's nothing hidden in there that I can see that's wrong. No ads, they warn you before cancelling and only cancel when you do something like hosting porn, and, while they will offer you promotions, you have no obligation to accept them. They call it a signature, but no one ever signs their posts...
Re: Pro hosting for life?
Than I am pleased...Let me check in with aplus.net on monday.. and see when are plan ended... when does this promotion end? the site should be up for renewal sooon... so.. yeah.. I'll check into it.. Re: Pro hosting for life?
IT says the next billing date is... err.. 2006-02-05... so.. we have.. a few months left with aplus.net And I doubt the deal will last that long... So we might have an overlap... but if we get a site for 60 years... (will they be around in 60 years still?) We are taking a risk about them still being around...And while I'll make sure the shireroth.org points at the new server.. and set up all the financial stuff... It's up to you to transfer everything... Unless it takes my authorization or something... E. Metzler (UEC)Duke of Brookshire"Never use a BOO/\/\ist as a diplomat" -- GSClicky Clicky..., Tiss for your own good ya know.
Re: Pro hosting for life?
And as for email... As long as a new account by the same name is made on the new server.. that shireroth.org points to.. all email (which get an account made on that server) shall still function. It MAY even be possible to transfer the old accounts and all their data.. but I can't be sure of that.. Moose? Maybe ask them if that is possible to move from aplus.net mail servers to here.. All the mail info is on the server... and would just need to be moved and compatable with their mail software... E. Metzler (UEC)Duke of Brookshire"Never use a BOO/\/\ist as a diplomat" -- GSClicky Clicky..., Tiss for your own good ya know.

If $50 is around €30, as I think it is, I'd be able to send the money to someone, or perhaps bring it with me if I ever make it to California..

I see no reason why I can't donate $20-50 at some point, just not right now. I'm trying pretty hard to stay within an allowance (ok, suggested maximum spending from the checking account, but same thing) from my parents, and I don't have the cash right now. *throws grenade for the hell of it*BO0O0O0O0/\/\!!!!!!

When I was your age, I went to school, held a 70-hour-a-week job as a meat grinder, AND fought in WW2 against the nazi's, allways going uphill both ways in the blinding snow while raising 60 children on a dying farm!Moral of the story? : Uh... your still a slacker and i'm still weird. Re: Pro hosting for life?
The 299$ lifetime deal is only worth it if we're planning on being around for at least another three years. So you know. Also, there's little chance that we'll be needing even a tenth of the allotted bandwidth and space. But yeah, if people are willing to put forth that kind of money, then why the hell not?I'm with the college and no job situation myself, so I'm sad to say I can't contribute anything right now as I am stretching my bank account just to buy books. Sweet Jesu they're all so expensive...and I guess you'd have to buy sciencey ones too, which are even worse.

Re: Pro hosting for life?
Worse comes to worse, if Shireroth breaks up and we all go our seperate ways, we have a host for all our seperate projects if need be. Plus, it allows us to move to a better forum system. That's the inevitable question: Are we willing to get new forums? They call it a signature, but no one ever signs their posts...
Re: Pro hosting for life?
No.Ezboard has problems.. but they still have advantages, and can maintain things better than we can.. We are lazy, and forgetful. They are paid to not be. And EZboard has always treated us pretty fairly... despite our problems with them. E. Re: Pro hosting for life?
ezBoard has always outweighted any self-hosting system. A huge part of this is the fact that ezBoard allows us to store the history of dead nations - it is much more common for nations that have died to have their forums completely dissapear when their hosts shut down. While we have been having problems obviously with the ezBug, ezBoard has generally been good overall with the archiving of history. Remember that this was the first real incident about a large-scale hacking of ezBoard, as opposed to the lesser amount of security offered by our own people hosting forums. Re: Pro hosting for life?
"for life or 60 years."My main qualm is that I really don't like the idea of continually throwing money into a hole, AKA EZBoard, especially when there are millions of other sites (not just nations, sites) that thrive on self-managed forums. They call it a signature, but no one ever signs their posts...
