I need a Dutch translation

This is for something I'm doing for Maraguo, but I don't want to talk about it in Maraguo yet...

Imagine a really scruffy-looking Scot, the kind of man who's been living in some hut out on the highlands for the last fourty years growing his red beard or something. He's saying to you "A kent yer faither" ("I knew your father"), with those harsh trilled r's and all. He's saying it because he believes you've achieved social status beyond your background - the sentence might continue something like "and he wasn't much of a man, so it's time for you to learn to see your place too".

I need a Dutch translation of the sentence "I knew your father", but if at all possible without making it over-the-top, I want it to sound harsh and disapproving, even a little bit threatening. Could you give me one, please?

"Ik heb jouw vader gekend". "Je" would be more personal, "jouw" sounds more distant and disapproving. Hope this helps. Maybe Jonas has something to add.

"Ik heb jouw vader gekend!" is indeed the best translation for this.

The similarities between Dutch and German continue to make me laugh... "Ich habe Seinen Vater gekennt" I believe would be the German translation...

If you find the similiarities between those languages amusing, you should take a look at the Scandinavian languages :p

Jag kände din far! (Swedish)
Jag kände far din! (dialectal Swedish)
Eg kjende far di! (Nynorsk Norwegian)
Jeg kjente far din! (Bokmål Norwegian)
Jeg kendte din far! (Danish)

Ich habe du Vater gekennt.
Well, see, the thing is, I used 'Sein', firstly, because 'du' is 'you', not 'your', and because 'du' and 'dein' are familiar pronouns... 'Sein', capitalized in this case, refers to 'your' in a formal capacity. I don't speak German natively, but I'm book-smart about it. :p

Yeah, that's kinda...wrong, I think...

Ich habe deinen Vater gekennt would be closer to that...

Yes, my mistake! I knew that it wasn't 'seinen Vater'.

"Seinen" is just more formal, but still correct.

No offense, but does capitalized "Seinen" exist? I believe only "Ihren", formal "your", exists.

Oop! You're right, "seinen" lower-case is "his"... it should be "Ich habe IHREN Vater Gekennt", thanks Gaius!
