Jess, you asked me if I had a microphone and I said I didn't. Well I went out and bought one yesterday. It set me back £15 bt it's worth it to scream at those noobs on TF2. Believe me. That's no joke.
Anyway, I might be able to do this with you if you want, though the time difference could cause problems. (Fort Benkern, London, remember?)

I don't know how helpful or interesting a guest I'd be or anything but I do have a microphone (and a webcam coincidentally) built into my laptop!

www.skype.com
It's a communications thing... you get an account like an AIM one and you can "call" each other using the program. You can also call real phones using it if you buy skype... monies.

you can also do video chat with someone for free over skype
you can audio chat with as large a group of people as you'd like but can only video chat with one person.

And I thought instant messaging was ground-breaking. Things have certainly come a long way from snail mail and expensive long-distance calls ($10 for 10 minutes). That was when gasoline was about 28 cents a gallon, and movie tickets could be purchased for 75 cents sometimes.

Aww... so no recreating that scene from the Doctor Who finale during the next Kaiserial succession crisis.

As I'm sure it fascinates the generations before mine how much has changed and how much has been achieved in the last 50 years or so technologically, I'm always rendered in a state of awe when I hear about those days. I also think about how different people would be. None of us younger Shirerithians would have used the interwebs at our age ("our age" being an increasingly broad term these days). Would we have been different people because of that, and other technological considerations?
I read "To Kill A Mockingbird" last year as part of my english course, and the details concerning the Radley House I found somewhat quizzical until they were explained. You see in that novel, the Radleys are considered strange and reclusive because they keep their front door closed. These days, I don't know what kind of reaction you would get if you kept your door open all day - in London, certainly that reaction would constitute a criminal offence.

I'm sure things have changed alot since the days you're describing but I know that Skype isn't exactly "new" I remember my dad using it when I was 6 or 7 so it's at least 10 years old and in the technology world that's like ancient XD. Back then you didn't have to pay for calls to phones so my Dad would use it for any of this clients that were long distance/toll calls. I'm pretty sure it didn't have video chat back then but it still existed! They've just improved on it since then ^_^

Beautiful. It fills the gaping hole left in my life by the demise of KZFO. Both informative and entertaining.
And I never had to worry about confusing Jess and Benkern's voices, that's for sure.

Jess and Benkern--
I listened with interest and think you are off to a good start. You might consider scripting it a bit more tightly. I"m not sure everyone has time for 20 minutes. I enjoyed hearing two hosts for the podcast, and I'm looking forward to hearing more news online in the near future. Keep up the good work.
