Re: Hurricane Gustav and beyond
Jonas-- I am sure all of us who do not suffer from the hurricanes are grateful, but every area has its weaknesses. Droughts hit unexpectedly when rains fail, causing loss of crops, clean drinking water, and massive wild fires; floods strike when rainfall outstrips runoff capacity; crops fail for var...

Re: Hurricane Gustav and beyond
Yep, though it has now been downgraded to a tropical storm. Hanna is right off the coast of the eastern US now, and no one knows where, if at all, she will hit land, and too more are lining up across the Atlantic. Years ago, all hurricanes were given women's names, but women protested, so they now a...

Re: Hello from Amokolia
Not true. I didn't even know about it until you joined Shireroth and I started to hear little bits about it. I am saddened, though, to hear about the demise of Gralus. I thought it would outlive the breakup. For a formerly non-involved and uninformed person, I do wish Novatainia well, and hope she w...

Hurricane Gustav and beyond
I am sure all of us have been watching the progress of Hurricane Gustav along the US Gulf Coast, and wishing those living in the path of this storm well. I am grateful that this storm was less severe than Katrina, that response to it was planned and positioned ahead of time, and that over two millio...

Re: Sarah Palin: Thoughts?
Ten parties????? I'm amazed Belgium can come to any decisions at all with such a crowded field of candidates. Here, the population is nearly evenly divided between the two major parties, and choices often hinge on the decisions of a few previously "undecided" voters.

Re: Our irregularly programmed evo vs ID back-and-forth
Mike-- Who, then, would you substitute for God? If not Him, who else was around to be the Designer? I think that just using the term "Independent Design" is rather a cop-out, a skirting of the label many wish to avoid. I would love to see someone be forthright enough to speak plainly here. There is ...

Re: Sarah Palin: Thoughts?
It is hard to see the real person behind all the propaganda from both sides, and we frequently end up with the leaders we deserve if we aren't paying close attention to any hidden agendas behind the attractive facade. I think that any time some new, attractive face is presented, we need to pay speci...

Re: Our irregularly programmed evo vs ID back-and-forth
But you have already told me you don't believe in God's existence. Then how could you believe in a Designer? This is just a consistent response whuch really adds nothing substantive to this discussion. If everything occurred without any outside influences, I find it amazing that everything just "hap...

Re: Sarah Palin: Thoughts?
Are you implying, Erik, that because Sarah Palin is a woman of faith she is not qualified to lead our nation? Most of the Founding Fathers were also men of faith, and it was not hindrance or a distraction when they held positions of power. It seems very narrow-minded to condemn someone whose world v...

Re: Our irregularly programmed evo vs ID back-and-forth
Not yet... But, Scott, just because one can see where an outside influence could have had a part in creation, or evolution, or, or, or, doesn't make one a Luddiite. The people who wrote the Bible could not possibly have understood the forces that were implemented in the origins of all there is. Anyt...

Re: Our irregularly programmed evo vs ID back-and-forth
I don't feel that by stating that there are still a lot of people who are unconvinced as to the validity of evolution implies that I am unable to understand and appreciate both arguments. And a lot of formerly unpopular, but now accepted, explanations for the shape of our world have overhauled our p...

Re: Sarah Palin: Thoughts?
Believe it or not, Erik, a lot of voters happen to feel that both evolution and creationism should be taught as alternate possible origins. Some will only accept evolution; others will only accept creationism. Evolution is still called a "theory," wihich has not yet been proven in many people's mind...

Re: Sarah Palin: Thoughts?
Have you been listening to her--her speeches, her perspectives, her positions on important issues? I think Palin is an inspired choice--she brings in a more conservative stance on some hot-button issues important to the politically conservative Republicans. She is a woman, which is always a novelty....

Ari-- Will there be any accommodation made for those of us who are basically computer-illiterate to train us in using the forums we control? I really have little idea how to alter mine. I had a few suggestions from people who knew computers well, and it helped, but I think ministers and those who ha...
